Chapter 11 - THE ROAD TO THE COASTThe kidnapper used Sarah’s voice to lure Chloe from the protected room.

A hallway camera showed Rachel Dane returning after her supposed arrest.

The woman in custody was another substitute.

Vale House had layers of people trained to carry the same identities, signatures, and faces.

The real Rachel placed Chloe inside a white van and drove west.

Lena pursued with unmarked units while Sarah followed in the command vehicle.

Harrison sent the coastal-house coordinates.

Victoria moved Lily into a reinforced safe room.

“Do not bring Chloe here,” Harrison warned.

“I am not controlling the van,” Sarah replied.

“The chip is guiding it.”

The doll’s ceramic button transmitted directions through an old Vale House navigation network. Rachel was following automated instructions to the third child’s location.

Infant C was nearby.

That was why the chip had activated.

The white van stopped at an abandoned marine research station overlooking the Pacific.

Rachel carried Chloe inside.

Sarah arrived minutes behind the first tactical team.

The building contained old laboratory rooms and a central chamber fitted with three child-sized biometric stations.

One already displayed Lily’s identity remotely.

The second activated when Chloe entered.

The third remained dark.

Rachel stood behind Chloe with one hand on her shoulder.

Sarah raised both hands.

“Let her go.”

“I was told to complete the family verification.”

“By whom?”

“Thomas Miller.”

Thomas had escaped medical custody during transport.

He appeared on the chamber screen from an unknown location.

“Sarah, the third girl is inside this building.”

“Where?”

“Caroline hid her here for years.”

“What is her name?”

“Emily.”

The system displayed a photograph.

A five-year-old girl with Sarah’s eyes and a heart-shaped birthmark beneath her shoulder sat inside a classroom surrounded by cameras.

The picture was current.

Thomas claimed Emily had been raised by Caroline and Elena together.

“She believes they are her mothers.”

“They stole her from me.”

“Yes.”

“And you sold her.”

Thomas looked older in the live feed.

“I sold access to the trust. Elena took the children before the transfer was completed.”

“You still accepted the money.”

“Yes.”

He did not ask for forgiveness.

He wanted the restitution account opened because Marcus planned to expose Thomas as the sole architect of Vale House’s worst crimes.

Thomas intended to release every identity and financial record publicly.

Lena objected.

“Some of those records belong to protected witnesses.”

“Protection built on false death is another prison,” Thomas replied.

Sarah refused another forced choice.

Victims should decide whether their identities became public.

Not Thomas.

Not Marcus.

Not Harrison.

Not the missing mothers.

Rachel loosened her grip on Chloe.

“I was told this would return children to their families.”

Sarah looked at her.

“You were told to move a five-year-old through armed checkpoints.”

Rachel’s face changed.

She had been raised inside Vale House too. The network taught substitutes that identities belonged to whoever could use them most effectively.

Chloe reached into the doll’s torn stomach.

She removed a tiny speaker.

“Daddy said press this if the bad people argue.”

She pressed it.

A woman’s voice filled the chamber.

“Thomas, step away from the account.”

Elena Miller appeared on the screen beside him.

She held a weapon against his side.

Sarah stared at the mother she had buried eighteen years earlier.

Elena looked directly at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where is Emily?”

“Not here.”

Thomas had lied again.

The third biometric signal came from the doll itself.

Caroline had encoded Emily’s newborn data into the second button eye.

The account could be opened without the child.

Thomas smiled despite the weapon.

“That means Caroline no longer needs Emily alive.”

Elena’s face changed.

A warning appeared on the chamber wall:

THIRD KEY REVOKED. LIVING SUBJECT REQUIRED.

Someone had removed the simulated identity.

A live camera opened.

Emily sat inside a dark vehicle beside an older woman.

Caroline Vale.

The woman looked into the lens.
