Chapter 15 - THE APARTMENT BELOWThe fire department declared Sarah’s apartment building unsafe, but the lower utility level remained intact.

Police entered through the rear service alley.
Beneath Sarah’s former kitchen was a sealed room absent from building plans.
The shipping barcode opened the lock.
Inside stood a worktable covered with cardboard boxes, red packing tape, doll parts, and printed versions of Harrison’s note.
Someone had prepared multiple packages.
One addressed to Sarah.
One to Victoria.
One to Elena.
One to Marcus.
The doll had never been a desperate improvisation.
It was part of a coordinated plan designed to move every faction at once.
Photographs covered the wall.
Sarah taking Chloe to preschool.
Harrison meeting Thomas.
Victoria entering Rose House.
Elena visiting Lily.
Caroline carrying Emily.
Someone had monitored them all more completely than Vale House had.
A child’s bed stood behind a curtain.
It was empty.
On the pillow lay a second dirty rag doll.
Sarah picked it up carefully.
Its torn seam contained another USB.
Lena connected it to an isolated laptop.
Harrison appeared in the video.
He looked younger and healthier than in the basement recording.
The date came from four months earlier.
“If Sarah sees this version, the first plan failed.”
Sarah turned toward him.
Harrison stood nearby under federal guard.
“I never recorded that.”
The man on-screen continued.
“Victoria will believe I stole the ledger. Thomas will believe I need rescue. Elena will believe Caroline has the third child. Sarah will believe the doll came from me.”
Harrison’s face emptied.
The recording sounded exactly like him.
But the man used phrases he did not recognize.
The video widened.
Someone sat beside the recorded Harrison.
Emily.
She held the clean twin doll.
A woman stepped behind her.
Sarah’s mother.
Elena looked directly into the camera, but her voice came from the live room behind Sarah.
“That is not me.”
Everyone turned.
Elena stood in the basement doorway holding a weapon lowered at her side.
She had escaped the estate chaos and followed the police.
The woman in the video looked identical to her.
Sarah remembered the Vale House substitute program.
“How many Elenas are there?” she whispered.
The recorded woman placed both hands on Emily’s shoulders.
“Sarah, you have been told there were three infants.”
The screen displayed the hospital audio.
Baby A.
Baby B.
Baby C.
Then a fourth cry emerged beneath the noise.
So faint that earlier technicians had missed it.
A nurse whispered:
“Baby D is viable.”
Harrison stepped backward.
“No.”
The woman continued.
“The restitution system does not require three sisters. It requires four.”
Sarah looked toward Chloe and Lily’s remote monitor.
A fourth biometric signal activated.
The location was not the basement.
It came from inside the protected pediatric center where the twins were staying.
Lena shouted into her radio.
No one answered.
The basement lights flickered.
The second rag doll’s speaker came alive.
A little girl whispered through it:
“Mommy, I found Chloe and Lily.”
Sarah grabbed the device.
“Who are you?”
The child began to answer.
A man’s voice interrupted.
Thomas Miller.
“Sarah, do not call her your daughter until you know which infant you carried home.”
Every screen in the basement changed.
A live feed showed Chloe and Lily sleeping in separate beds.
Between them stood a fourth girl holding the original doll.
She looked exactly like both of them.
Behind her, a man reached toward the security camera.
Harrison stared at the hand.
The wedding ring belonged to him.
The feed cut to black.
