Chapter 14 - THE OFFICER WITH ELENA’S EYESFederal agents were ordered to remove helmets and submit fingerprints.

One female officer refused.
She ran toward the concealed passage Caroline had used.
Lena pursued her through a service corridor beneath the ballroom.
Sarah followed despite orders to remain behind.
The woman reached a locked elevator and removed her helmet.
She looked approximately forty.
Her eyes matched Elena’s.
Her face resembled Sarah’s.
“My name is Rebecca Miller,” she said.
Sarah stopped.
“I don’t have a sister.”
“You do.”
Rebecca was Elena’s first daughter, born before she married Thomas. Marcus Vale was also her biological father.
Elena placed Rebecca with another family to hide the affair. Vale House later recruited the girl as an adult without telling her Sarah existed.
Rebecca became a federal contractor and spent years investigating the same network from inside law enforcement.
“You were the hidden heir,” Sarah said.
“Yes.”
“Did you help Caroline escape?”
“I helped Emily escape.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
Rebecca accepted the accusation.
She believed police protection remained compromised. Caroline promised to take Emily to an independent safe house.
“Caroline has lied to that child for five years.”
“And Thomas, Marcus, Harrison, Victoria, Elena, and the police have all lied too.”
“You made the decision alone.”
“Yes.”
Another adult had chosen for a child while claiming no trustworthy alternative existed.
Rebecca held the final founder key.
Because she was Marcus’s eldest daughter, she could override Victoria.
She offered to transfer the restitution archive to federal custody.
Sarah asked one question.
“Will the hidden people choose whether their identities are released?”
Rebecca hesitated.
Federal evidence rules might require disclosure.
“Then you are offering a different institution the same control.”
Rebecca lowered the key.
“I don’t know another way.”
“Neither did Harrison. Neither did Elena. Neither did Caroline. Not knowing does not give us ownership of other people.”
Lena reached the corridor.
Rebecca surrendered the key.
They returned to the ballroom.
Harrison remained under guard.
Victoria sat beside the wall, bleeding slightly from her forehead.
Marcus had been taken to a secured vehicle.
Thomas’s location remained unknown.
The restitution account waited.
Sarah selected a temporary freeze preserving the money and identities without transferring authority to any adult faction.
The system accepted it for seventy-two hours.
In that time, a court would appoint independent advocates for Chloe, Lily, and Emily while survivor groups reviewed the choices.
It was not a perfect ending.
It was the first decision designed not to complete the children’s futures without them.
Lily was brought to a protected pediatric center.
Sarah met her in person without Harrison, Victoria, or Elena in the room.
Chloe sat beside Sarah.
The twins stared at each other.
“You look like me,” Chloe said.
Lily touched the doll’s remaining button eye.
“You have my toy.”
“It was Victoria’s.”
Lily frowned.
“Then nobody knows whose it is.”
They did not embrace immediately.
They sat on opposite sides of a small table and shared crackers.
Sarah remained close without demanding that either girl call her Mom.
Emily was still missing with Caroline.
Then the doll’s hidden speaker activated.
A live voice whispered:
“Sarah, Caroline does not have Emily.”
Everyone froze.
The speaker continued.
“Rebecca took the wrong child from the estate.”
A photograph appeared on Sarah’s phone.
Caroline sat unconscious inside a crashed vehicle.
The little girl beside her was a trained Vale House substitute.
Emily had remained inside the mansion during the raid.
Sarah looked toward Harrison.
He had already gone pale.
“Where would they hide her?” Lena asked.
Harrison looked toward the torn doll.
“Inside the place the package was mailed from.”
The shipping label’s original barcode led back to Sarah’s burned apartment building.

Someone had sent the doll from a unit beneath her own.
👉 Emily had been hidden near Sarah and Chloe from the beginning, while the mysterious sender watched the package reach its target.
