Chapter 9 - MARCUS VALE’S DAUGHTERSVictoria laughed once.
It contained no humor.
“You told me my entire childhood that Mother betrayed you with Thomas.”
“She did,” Marcus replied. “But not before I betrayed her with Elena Miller.”
Sarah felt sick.
Marcus claimed Elena worked briefly for Vale House before marrying Thomas. Their affair produced Sarah. Thomas agreed to raise her in exchange for a position inside the identity network.
“Does Thomas know?”
“He has always known.”
Sarah thought of the man calling her his little girl from the Rose House bed.
Biology did not erase years of parenthood.
His betrayal did not become smaller because another man shared her blood.
“Why monitor me?” she asked.
“You inherited access rights through Elena.”
“To stolen money?”
“To restitution assets my father intended to return gradually.”
“Gradually,” Victoria repeated. “The word wealthy criminals use when they want to keep money until death.”
Marcus ignored her.
Sarah’s pregnancy complicated the Vale succession. Marcus had only one publicly recognized daughter, Victoria, whose medical records stated she could not have children.
Sarah’s daughters could become biological heirs.
Marcus wanted one child raised within the Vale family, one hidden with Elena, and one left with Sarah as insurance against exposure.
“You divided infants like accounts,” Sarah said.
“I prevented a war.”
“You created one.”
Marcus offered an exchange.
Give him the doll’s chip and every copy Harrison sent.
He would return Lily.
“What about Infant C?”
“Caroline took her beyond my reach.”
“Is Caroline alive?”
“Yes.”
“Is Elena?”
“Yes.”
“Where is Harrison?”
Marcus’s calm expression shifted slightly.
“He is with them.”
The women driving Harrison had not been Elena alone. Caroline was inside the vehicle.
Both supposedly dead mothers had joined forces again.
Marcus claimed they intended to open the restitution account and move every asset before victims or courts could verify the identities.
Victoria stepped closer.
“You expect us to believe you are protecting victims?”
“No. I am protecting Vale House.”
The honesty was almost refreshing.
Security alarms continued pulsing.
Lena’s voice came through Sarah’s hidden earpiece.
“Federal team is two minutes out.”
Marcus noticed Sarah listening.
He smiled.
“Detective Ortiz will not reach this room.”
The elevator doors opened behind the guards.
Lena stood inside with two federal agents.
Marcus looked surprised for the first time.
Victoria had secretly given her a founder code.
The agents secured the archive and separated everyone.
No final arrest occurred. Marcus’s attorneys arrived within minutes, arguing that the files were privileged family documents. A judge ordered temporary preservation while ownership and authenticity were reviewed.
Sarah cared only about the children.
The archive contained a recent medical appointment for Lily under the name Grace Shaw.
The clinic sat in Oxnard.
Police reached it.
The waiting room was empty.
A nurse had received a call instructing her to send the child through a rear entrance.
The caller used Sarah’s voice.
A camera captured a woman carrying Lily into a blue sedan.
The woman looked exactly like Sarah.
Same hair.
Same height.
Same face.
A surgical analysis showed subtle differences near the jaw.
Victoria recognized her.
“Rachel Dane.”
A Vale House identity substitute trained to impersonate family members.
Rachel had signed documents as Victoria, Caroline, Elena, and now Sarah.
Inside the abandoned clinic room, police found a note from Harrison.
LILY IS SAFE ONLY WHILE THEY BELIEVE SARAH WILL CHOOSE CHLOE.
Below it was a second sentence.
