Chapter 2

The house went silent after Daniel spoke.
Not peaceful.
Silent in the way a room becomes when everyone is deciding what version of the truth will survive.
Claire tried to move.
Pain stopped her.
Evelyn descended the last few steps with slow, careful elegance.
Her pale blue blouse and white blazer looked untouched by panic.
“Daniel,” she said softly, “call someone before she becomes hysterical.”
Claire stared at her.
Not help her.
Not check her.
Call someone before she becomes hysterical.
Olivia remained near the hall, still covering her mouth, but her eyes were dry.
Claire noticed that too.
Every expression in the room had a purpose.
Evelyn performed concern.
Olivia performed shock.
Daniel performed frustration.
Only Claire was bleeding.
Only Claire was afraid.
Only Claire was asking about the baby.
She reached toward her phone.
Daniel saw the movement.
“Leave it.”
Claire froze.
The security notification blinked again.
Evelyn’s gaze dropped toward the screen for half a second.
Then she looked away too quickly.
That was when Claire knew.
Something had happened before the fall.
Something she could not yet name.
Something in her body.
In the tea Evelyn had insisted she drink.

In the dizziness that hit her before her foot missed the step.
