Chapter 6

Later that night, Daniel sat on the edge of the bedroom bed.
Not at the hospital.
Not beside Claire.
Home.
Olivia sat next to him wearing Claire’s ivory silk robe.
Evelyn sat in the armchair with a teacup, calm again, as if the ambulance had taken away an inconvenience instead of a pregnant woman.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“She’ll make this dramatic.”
Olivia leaned closer.
“She didn’t see anything.”
Evelyn lifted the teacup.
“She slipped.”
The same words.
Polished by repetition.
Daniel looked toward the bedroom door.
“She took her phone.”
Evelyn paused.
Only for a second.
“Then you should hope your camera system was off.”
Daniel’s phone rang before he could answer.
He looked at the screen.
Hospital.
His irritation returned.
He answered on speaker.
“This is Daniel.”
Dr. Patel’s voice came through clear and firm.
“We found a sedative in Claire’s blood.”
The bedroom went still.
Olivia pulled away from Daniel.
Evelyn’s teacup froze halfway to her lips.
Daniel did not speak.
