Chapter 4

The paramedics arrived to find Claire still on the floor.
Evelyn tried to speak first.
“She slipped.”
One paramedic nodded politely, then ignored her and knelt beside Claire.
“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”
“Claire Mercer.”
“How far along are you?”
Claire swallowed.
“Sixteen weeks.”
Daniel looked irritated by the questions.
Evelyn watched every answer.
Olivia stood near the wall, arms wrapped around herself, quiet now.
The paramedic asked if Claire had felt dizzy before the fall.
Claire’s eyes moved to Evelyn.
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s smile tightened.
Daniel snapped, “She has been tired all week.”
The paramedic did not argue.
He only wrote something down.
Claire noticed.
So did Evelyn.
As they placed Claire carefully onto the stretcher, she turned her head toward the staircase.
Her phone still lay on the floor.
The notification blinked again.
“Please,” Claire whispered to the paramedic, “my phone.”
Daniel stepped toward it.
The paramedic got there first.
He placed it beside Claire on the stretcher.
Daniel’s face changed for one instant.
Not anger.
