Chapter 5

At the hospital, Claire was taken through bright corridors under cold white lights.
No medical procedure was shown.
No final pregnancy outcome was revealed.
Only questions.
Careful hands.
Measured voices.
Blood work.
Observation.
The kind of calm that made fear feel both smaller and sharper.
Claire asked about the baby.
The nurse squeezed her hand.
“The doctor will speak with you soon.”
That was not an answer.
But it was not silence either.
Claire held on to that.
Then Dr. Hannah Patel entered.
Professional.
Firm.
Kind without being soft.
She asked Claire what happened.
Claire told her only what she knew.
“I got dizzy at the top of the stairs. I don’t remember drinking much water today. My mother-in-law gave me tea.”
Dr. Patel’s eyes sharpened slightly.
“Tea?”
“Chamomile. She said it would calm my nerves.”
“Did you ask for it?”
“No.”
“Did you feel sleepy afterward?”
Claire stared at her.
The question made the room colder.
“Yes.”
Dr. Patel nodded once and ordered additional testing.
Claire closed her eyes.
The house had watched.
Her body had remembered.
