Daniel paced once across the room.
Then stopped.
“What if she remembers?”
Evelyn turned on him.
“She fell.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Olivia wrapped the robe tighter around herself.
“I didn’t know about anything in her blood.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Then keep it that way.”
Olivia recoiled.
The alliance cracked.
Daniel saw it happen.
Claire had been right about one thing he never respected.
Secrets do not stay loyal under pressure.
They scatter toward survival.
His phone began vibrating again.
No readable notification appeared.
Only light.
Buzzing.
Consequence approaching without yet entering the room.
Evelyn walked toward the window and saw faint red-and-blue reflections far down the street.
She stepped back.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom?”
Evelyn did not answer.
The pleasant smile from the staircase was gone now.
The woman who had said “She slipped” looked suddenly older, smaller, and terribly awake.
The hospital had found what the stairs tried to hide.
