Olivia stood up from the bed.
The robe shifted around her shoulders, making the betrayal visible in a way no explanation could soften.
“What does she mean, police?”
Daniel did not answer.
He was still staring at the phone.
Evelyn set the teacup down with careful precision.
“Daniel, pick it up.”
He did not.
“Daniel.”
Her voice sharpened.
That snapped him back.
He bent and grabbed the phone, but his hand shook.
Dr. Patel’s voice came through again.
“Claire is under medical protection. Officers will be taking statements.”
Evelyn’s face drained.
Olivia whispered, “Statements from who?”
Daniel ended the call.
The silence afterward felt worse.
For a moment, none of them performed.
No grieving mother-in-law.
No concerned husband.
No shocked family friend.
Just three people in a bedroom where Claire’s robe, Claire’s bed, and Claire’s absence accused them without words.
Outside, far away at first, a siren moved through the suburban night.
Daniel looked toward the window.
Evelyn stood.
“Do not panic.”
