Chapter 1 - The Boy Beneath the Table

Mother Returns From London And Finds Her Little Son Crawling Beneath The Table While Her Husband Protects His Mistress’s Child.

Madeline’s suitcase hit the marble floor with a sound that cracked through the mansion foyer.

For one second, no one moved.

The chandelier above the black staircase glowed warmly over polished floors, cream walls, a marble dining area, and a breakfast table set as if nothing monstrous had happened there.

Phones lay beside plates.

A cake plate sat near the center.

Noelle calmly held a spoonful of cake near Austin’s mouth.

Cynthia sat too close to Jeffrey, wearing a red dress in Madeline’s home like she had always belonged there.

And under the dining table, Liam flinched.

Madeline’s four-year-old son scrambled backward on his hands and knees, barefoot, dirty, trembling, and terrified.

Not running to her.

Not calling her Mommy.

Hiding from adults.

Madeline’s breath disappeared.

Jeffrey finally looked up from his phone.

He did not stand.

He did not look ashamed enough.

He only glanced toward Liam like the child was an inconvenience.

“Keep him away from the child.”

Madeline’s eyes moved to Austin.

Clean shirt.

Full cheeks.

Cake on his lips.

Noelle smiling at him with grandmotherly warmth.

Then she looked back at Liam beneath the table.

Her own son.

Crawling on the floor in his own house.

Madeline dropped to her knees.

“Liam?”

He recoiled and covered part of his face.

A small whimper came from him.

Madeline froze, destroyed by the fact that her voice frightened him.

Noelle lifted another spoonful of cake as if this were merely an awkward interruption.

“Don’t let that boy sit at the table. He’s used to eating on the floor.”

Madeline slowly looked up.

Cynthia brushed Jeffrey’s arm with a smug half-smile.

“Austin deserves a peaceful home.”

Something inside Madeline went silent.

The tears did not leave.

They froze.

She rose slowly, eyes moving from Jeffrey to Cynthia to Noelle.

Then she reached into her coat pocket and touched her phone.

“Liam… it’s Mommy. Say that again.”

Jeffrey’s face changed too late.

Madeline was no longer only grieving.
