Chapter 8 - Noelle’s Cake Spoon

Noelle still held the cake spoon.

The detail burned into Madeline’s mind.

Even after everything.

Even after Liam crawled from under the table.

Even after Jeffrey’s face had gone pale from seeing the phone.

Even after Cynthia’s confidence cracked.

Noelle still sat with the spoon in her hand, angled toward Austin as if affection could continue normally while another child shook on the floor.

Madeline looked at it.

Then at her.

“Put the spoon down.”

Noelle’s chin lifted.

“Do not speak to me like staff.”

Madeline’s eyes went cold.

“I am speaking to you like a witness.”

Noelle’s hand trembled.

The spoon clicked against the cake plate.

Austin looked up, confused.

Madeline softened her voice immediately.

Not for Noelle.

For the child.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

Cynthia bristled.

“Don’t talk to him.”

Jeffrey said, “Cynthia.”

Again, not enough.

Madeline’s phone caught it all.

The ownership.

The correction.

The hierarchy.

Liam’s fingers finally curled around Madeline’s hand.

She let out a breath she had been holding since the doorway.

“Can I hold you?”

Liam looked at Jeffrey.

Madeline’s heart cracked.

He was asking permission with his eyes from the person who frightened him.

Madeline turned her head slowly toward Jeffrey.

“Tell him he can come to me.”

Jeffrey’s jaw tightened.

Noelle whispered, “Jeffrey.”

Cynthia looked furious.

The room held its breath.

Jeffrey looked at the phone.

Then at Liam.

Then at Madeline.

“He can go.”

Liam did not move.

Madeline’s voice stayed gentle.

“Liam, you can come because you want to. Not because he said so.”

The boy stared at her.

Then he crawled into her arms.

Madeline pulled him close carefully, not squeezing too hard, not startling him, one arm around his small back while her phone stayed recording in the other hand.

Her face crumpled for one second.

Then she lifted her eyes to the adults.

Ice returned.
