Chapter 3 - Austin at the Table

Austin did not understand the cruelty around him.
He sat at the dining table in his clean white shirt, happily eating cake while adults arranged love like property.
He was not the villain.
Madeline knew that immediately.
The toddler smiled when Noelle lifted the spoon.
He kicked his little feet under the chair and reached for berries near the plate.
He was safe.
Fed.
Praised.
Protected.
That was what a child should be.
Madeline looked at Liam again and nearly broke.
Her son should have been beside him, maybe complaining about berries, maybe asking for waffles, maybe making a mess with frosting and laughing when she wiped his face.
Instead, Liam crouched on the floor like he had learned the table was not for him.
Noelle’s words repeated in Madeline’s head.
He’s used to eating on the floor.
Used to.
Not today.
Not once.
Used to.
Madeline’s fingers tightened around the phone.
Jeffrey stepped closer.
“Stop staring at everyone like that.”
Madeline did not look away from Liam.
“How long?”
Jeffrey’s jaw tightened.
“How long what?”
“How long has he been eating under the table?”
Cynthia made a soft scoffing sound.
“He goes there himself.”
Madeline’s eyes moved to her.
Cynthia’s smugness faltered for half a second, then returned.
“He’s jealous of Austin.”
The sentence nearly made Madeline lunge.
She did not.
She stayed still.
The phone stayed angled.
Recording.
“Jealous,” Madeline repeated.
Cynthia lifted her chin.
“Yes. He needs boundaries.”
Madeline looked at Jeffrey.
“You let her talk about our son like that?”
Jeffrey’s face hardened.
“Our son needs discipline.”
The words came too easily.
No shame.
No pause.
No fatherly pain.
Madeline felt something inside her seal shut.
She had loved Jeffrey once because she thought his confidence was steadiness.
Now she saw it for what it was: coldness dressed as authority.
Noelle placed the spoon down beside Austin’s plate.
“You were away, Madeline. You have no idea what we’ve dealt with.”
Madeline looked at the cake plate.
The neat table.
The clean child.
The frightened one.
“I’m beginning to.”
Jeffrey’s eyes narrowed.
He sensed the danger but not the shape of it.
