Chapter 4 - Cynthia in the Red Dress

Cynthia’s red dress looked intentional.

Not accidental.

Not casual.

It was the kind of dress a woman wore when she wanted to be seen occupying someone else’s space.

She sat near Jeffrey’s chair, angled toward him with the confidence of a person who had crossed the line long before Madeline opened the front door.

Her hand brushed his sleeve again.

This time, Madeline watched Jeffrey fail to pull away.

That failure told her almost as much as Liam’s fear.

Almost.

Cynthia noticed Madeline watching and smiled faintly.

“You look exhausted,” she said.

Madeline’s voice stayed calm.

“I flew overnight.”

“No one asked you to.”

Jeffrey whispered, “Cynthia.”

Not sharply.

Not enough.

A correction only because she had spoken too plainly in front of the wife.

Madeline turned the phone slightly, keeping it low by the side of her coat.

Noelle’s eyes flicked downward.

Madeline saw it.

Noelle suspected something.

Good.

Fear might make her careful.

But entitlement often makes people speak anyway.

Madeline looked at Jeffrey.

“Why is she here?”

Jeffrey exhaled heavily, as if Madeline were the unreasonable one.

“She helped while you were gone.”

“With my child?”

“With the house.”

Cynthia smiled.

“With Austin.”

The name landed between them.

Austin.

Her child.

Not Jeffrey’s?

Not said.

Not revealed.

Not resolved.

Madeline did not ask yet.

The confrontation was not about Cynthia’s romance first.

It was about Liam.

Liam had begun rocking slightly beneath the table, eyes moving from adult to adult.

Madeline lowered her body again, keeping distance.

“Baby, you don’t have to hide.”

He whispered something too small to hear.

Madeline leaned closer.

“What was that?”

Liam’s lower lip trembled.

“Not allowed.”

The room went still.

Madeline’s face lost every trace of softness except the part she kept for him.

“Not allowed where?”

He looked toward the table.

Noelle’s face tightened.

Jeffrey snapped, “Enough.”

Madeline looked up slowly.

The phone was still recording.

“Enough of what, Jeffrey?”

He realized then that his command sounded wrong.

Too harsh.

Too revealing.

Madeline saw him understand that she was no longer simply reacting.

She was asking questions for a record.
