Chapter 7 - Liam’s First Step Toward Her

Liam moved one hand forward.

Only one.

His small palm pressed against the polished floor beyond the shadow of the dining table.

Madeline did not rush.

She stayed kneeling, phone low at her side, the other hand open on the floor.

“Good job, baby,” she whispered.

Jeffrey looked uncomfortable.

Noelle looked irritated.

Cynthia looked disgusted.

That disgust went straight into Madeline’s memory.

Liam crawled another few inches.

His eyes stayed on Madeline’s face, searching for the mother he remembered beneath the shock and tears.

Madeline kept her breathing slow.

No sudden moves.

No grabbing.

No adult impatience.

Austin babbled happily at the table, unaware.

Noelle immediately softened toward him, wiping cake from his mouth with a napkin.

The contrast was almost obscene.

Liam watched that too.

Madeline saw the pain in his little face.

A child should not understand exclusion before kindergarten.

Jeffrey said, quieter now, “He’s fine.”

Madeline did not look at him.

“He is not.”

“You’re overreacting.”

She lifted her eyes.

“Say it louder.”

Jeffrey’s face hardened, then faltered.

He looked at the phone again.

Cynthia grabbed her own phone from the table.

Madeline noticed.

“Calling someone?”

Cynthia froze.

Noelle snapped, “This is our home too.”

Madeline slowly turned.

“Our?”

Silence.

Cynthia’s eyes widened.

Jeffrey looked at Noelle with fury.

Noelle realized what she had said.

Madeline did not smile.

She simply tilted the phone a little more.

The recording kept running.

Liam crawled another inch.

Then stopped when Jeffrey shifted his weight.

Madeline’s eyes flashed toward her husband.

“Don’t move.”

Jeffrey froze.

The command shocked everyone because Madeline had never spoken to him like that.

Not in front of his mother.

Not in front of guests.

Not in the house he believed belonged to his authority.

Liam looked between them.

Then he moved again.

This time, he reached Madeline’s hand.

His fingers touched hers.

She did not close around him yet.

She let him choose the rest.
