Chapter 6 - Jeffrey Notices Too Late

Jeffrey finally noticed the phone.

Not fully.

Not enough to see the screen.

But enough to see the angle.

The way Madeline’s hand stayed low by her coat.

The way she turned her body slightly whenever someone spoke.

The way her thumb remained pressed near the edge.

His expression changed.

Small.

Fast.

Madeline saw panic try to hide behind anger.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

She looked at him.

“Listening.”

His eyes dropped toward her hand.

Noelle followed his gaze.

Cynthia’s face tightened.

The room shifted instantly.

Cruelty became caution.

That was why Madeline had waited.

People reveal themselves before they realize there is a witness.

Jeffrey took a step toward her.

“Give me your phone.”

Liam recoiled hard beneath the table.

Madeline’s eyes snapped to her son.

Then back to Jeffrey.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

Final.

Jeffrey stopped, aware of how it would look if he grabbed her now.

Noelle recovered first.

“Madeline, don’t be childish. You walked into a complicated situation.”

Madeline turned toward her.

“A four-year-old under a table is not complicated.”

Noelle’s pearl necklace rose and fell with her breath.

“He is dramatic.”

Madeline’s voice sharpened.

“He is terrified.”

Noelle looked away.

Cynthia stood suddenly, her chair scraping against marble.

“I won’t be recorded being insulted.”

Madeline looked at her red dress, her hand hovering near Jeffrey’s arm, her too-comfortable place at the table.

“Then stop speaking.”

Cynthia’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Jeffrey snapped, “Enough.”

Madeline lifted the phone slightly now.

Not enough to show the screen.

Enough for everyone to understand.

“Is that your favorite word tonight?”

His face drained.

The phone was real.

The recording was real.

The moment was no longer private.

Madeline looked down at Liam.

“I’m going to pick you up only if you want me to.”

Liam stared at her.

His eyes filled.

He did not move forward yet.

That hesitation almost destroyed her.

But she waited.

Because unlike the others, she would not take his body by force and call it care.
