Chapter 11 - ELEANOR VOSS Eleanor did not wait at the observatory.
She left Graham tied to a chair beneath the main telescope and spoke through hidden speakers.
Arturo entered carrying a duplicate of Sofia’s journal. León remained inside an armored vehicle with Detective Morales, though he had argued to accompany his uncle.
Graham’s face was bruised.
“Untie me.”
Arturo did not move.
“Did you poison my sister?”
“No.”
“Did you build Golden Continuity?”
“Yes.”
“Did you profit from her illness?”
Graham looked away.
“Yes.”
The admission sounded almost smaller than the crime.
He claimed Golden Continuity began as an insurance structure after Arturo’s father feared the family empire would collapse if an heir died unexpectedly.
Graham expanded it secretly.
Each crisis generated liquidity that he used to protect Santillán companies during unstable periods.
“You stole billions while calling it protection.”
“I preserved the estate.”
“You poisoned people.”
“I never authorized lethal exposure.”
Arturo laughed bitterly.
“You created incentives for everyone beneath you to escalate.”
Graham said Eleanor transformed the system. She believed real-time medical events produced more valuable predictive data than fabricated diagnoses. She recruited Mercer, manipulated Victoria, and revived Edwin’s impersonation techniques.
“Where is Edwin?” Arturo asked.
“Dead.”
“Did you kill him?”
Graham’s silence answered.
Edwin threatened to expose the operation after Sofia discovered the botanical shipments. Graham ordered him detained. Eleanor caused his death during the struggle and later used the six-finger identity to frighten witnesses.
The distorted speakers activated.
Eleanor’s voice filled the dome.
“Father always edits his own guilt.”
A projection appeared across the observatory wall.
It showed Graham meeting Dr. Mercer years earlier.
Graham instructed him to classify Sofia’s symptoms as anxiety until the Golden Continuity transfer cleared.
He had not merely ignored her poisoning.
He knowingly delayed the diagnosis.
Graham closed his eyes.
Arturo raised a weapon, but Morales spoke through his earpiece.
“Do not shoot. We need Eleanor’s location.”
Eleanor ordered Arturo to place the journal beneath the telescope.
He complied with the duplicate.
A mechanical arm retrieved it through a floor panel.
Seconds later, an alarm sounded.
“She knows it’s false,” Graham whispered.
The observatory shutters closed.
Gas began hissing from ceiling vents.
Arturo cut Graham’s restraints and forced him toward the emergency stairs.
Outside, León saw movement among the rocks.
A woman in a dark medical coat ran toward a waiting vehicle.
He left the armored car before Morales could stop him.
“Eleanor!”
She turned.
For the first time, León saw the woman whose DNA was on Julián’s bottle.
Eleanor aimed a pistol.
“You ruined your mother’s work.”
“My mother was trying to expose you.”
“She was trying to take control.”
“She was trying to stay alive.”
Eleanor hesitated.
That allowed Morales to fire into the ground near her. Eleanor fled behind the ridge and escaped through an old mine road.
The observatory gas proved nonlethal. It caused temporary confusion and memory loss—another Santillán botanical compound.
Graham survived.
Police arrested him as soon as he reached fresh air.
Before officers removed him, he looked toward León.
“Eleanor does not want the money anymore.”
“What does she want?”
“To prove Sofia chose you over Julián.”
León stared at him.
“My mother died before Julián was born.”
Graham shook his head.
