Chapter 12 - THE TWO HEIRS The original journal contained a sealed letter hidden inside its spine.
León opened it beside Julián’s hospital crib while Arturo stood across from him.
Sofia had written the letter three years before the baby’s birth.
She knew Arturo intended to have a child through a private fertility program after his wife suffered repeated miscarriages. Graham managed the legal and medical arrangements.
Sofia discovered the clinic belonged indirectly to Golden Continuity.
She feared Graham intended to control the future heir from conception.
If Arturo’s child is born, protect him. He will enter this family already owned by men who call ownership protection.
León lowered the letter.
“She knew.”
Arturo looked toward his sleeping son.
“I dismissed her warnings.”
Sofia had amended her own inheritance privately. If Golden Continuity ever targeted Arturo’s child, all shares she left to León would combine with Julián’s trust under a joint protective structure.
Neither heir could control the estate alone.
León and Julián had to survive together.
Eleanor’s claim that Sofia chose León over Julián was false.
She chose both.
That destroyed the legal foundation of Graham’s emergency trusteeship. Once Sofia’s amendment was filed, Graham’s control of the transferred funds could be challenged.
Eleanor needed the journal because it proved the two-heir structure.
Without it, she could present León as the sole alternate heir and frame him for Julián’s poisoning.
Detective Morales released a controlled public statement announcing that León had been cleared.
Within an hour, anonymous files appeared online.
They showed León researching toxic plants, entering the greenhouse, and arguing that the Santillán estate belonged to Sofia’s line.
Most footage was real but removed from context.
The campaign painted him as obsessed with inheritance.
Graham’s behavioral machine continued operating after his arrest.
Eleanor had prepared releases for every possible development.
Arturo wanted León moved under federal protection.
León refused to leave Julián.
“You still think you can order everyone into separate rooms and call it safety.”
Arturo accepted the accusation.
“What do you suggest?”
“We stay where we can see each other.”
Security moved both boys to a private pediatric wing guarded by state and federal officers. Arturo slept in a chair outside Julián’s room. León occupied the adjoining room.
For two nights, nothing happened.
On the third, Julián’s monitor showed a sudden heart rhythm change.
Dr. Shaw rushed in.
No toxin appeared in his blood.
The implanted capsule had been removed.
But the monitor displayed data as though it remained inside his body.
Someone was transmitting a false emergency signal.
While doctors focused on Julián, a fire alarm emptied the adjoining wing.
León noticed smoke under his own door.
He covered his face and crawled toward the hallway.
The smoke was theatrical, generated by a concealed device.
A woman wearing a nurse’s uniform emerged through it.
Eleanor.
She grabbed León and pressed a syringe against his neck.
“You were supposed to be the survivor,” she whispered.
León drove his elbow backward and broke free.
Security officers rushed toward them.
Eleanor escaped through a maintenance hatch, leaving the syringe behind.
It contained the same compound found in Sofia’s hair.
She had come to make León appear to suffer the hereditary symptoms that discredited his mother.
The hatch led to the hospital roof.
A helicopter had departed ninety seconds earlier.
