Chapter 8 - THE GREENHOUSE DEMAND Arturo refused to send León.

León refused to stay behind.
“My mother hid the evidence there. Whoever called thinks I know where the rest is.”
“You are fourteen,” Arturo said.
“And Julián is an infant. That didn’t stop them from using him.”
Detective Morales proposed a controlled operation. León would approach the greenhouse wearing a concealed transmitter while tactical officers surrounded the grounds.
Arturo objected until the hospital reported another crisis.
Julián’s heart rhythm changed abruptly.
A nurse found a gold thread inside his fresh feeding tube package.
The package had arrived sealed from the manufacturer.
Someone had infiltrated the hospital supply chain.
Dr. Shaw replaced every item in Julián’s room and moved him under armed guard. The change stabilized him, but the message was clear.
The network extended beyond the estate.
León entered the greenhouse at sunset.
Burned beams still crossed the ceiling like black ribs. Weeds grew through cracked tiles. The air smelled of damp earth and old smoke.
A phone lay on the central worktable.
It rang once.
León answered.
A distorted male voice said, “Your mother left something beneath the eastern bench.”
León knelt and found a rusted metal box.
“Open it.”
Inside was Sofia’s field journal, a vial of preserved foxglove sap, and a small recorder.
“Why do you want this?” León asked.
“I want the page she removed.”
“I don’t have it.”
“You are the only person she trusted.”
“She died before she could tell me anything.”
The voice became colder.
“She told you through the nursery rhyme.”
León remembered a song Sofia sang while teaching him botanical names. He had never considered it a code.
The final lines described three windows, a sleeping fox, and gold beneath a root.
León looked toward the greenhouse floor.
Three tall windows faced east.
Beneath the third, a fox-shaped iron ornament marked a drainage grate.
He lifted it.
A leather packet lay beneath the root system of a dead climbing rose.
Before he could open it, the greenhouse lights died.
Someone moved behind him.
León swung the metal box and struck an arm.
A masked man grabbed his jacket. León tore free and ran toward the door, but a second figure blocked it.
There were two intruders.
Tactical officers rushed in.
One figure escaped through a shattered glass panel.
The other was tackled beside the worktable.
When police removed the mask, Dr. Mercer lay beneath it.
Arturo stared at him.
Mercer insisted he had entered to protect León after receiving another forged message.
Morales searched him.
Inside his pocket was the missing gold-ribbon card from the nursery.
The front read:
For the child who completes the line.
The back carried no name.
Mercer claimed he found it inside the tunnel.
León opened Sofia’s leather packet.
It contained corporate records proving Golden Continuity was established through Graham’s law firm.
But the final authorization had been signed by Dr. Mercer.
Mercer looked at the document and whispered:
“I signed because Graham said it was medical insurance.”
Graham was no longer at the command post.

His vehicle had left the estate minutes before the greenhouse lights failed.
👉 Graham disappeared just as Sofia’s records connected him to the account that profited from every poisoned heir.
