PART 1
“A single father rushed his daughter to the hospital… then froze when the pregnant doctor turned around.”
Ethan Hayes carried his six-year-old daughter through the emergency room doors with one arm under her knees and terror in his throat.
Harper’s wrist was swollen.
Her face was pale.
Her little fingers clutched his suit jacket like she was afraid he might disappear if she let go.
“She fell from the stairs,” Ethan told the nurse.
“She said she slipped.”
The nurse guided them into a bright treatment bay.
Medical monitors beeped softly.
An IV stand stood beside the bed.
A curtain moved in the cold hospital air.
Then the doctor turned around.
Ethan forgot how to breathe.
Serena Cole stood in front of him in a white coat over blue scrubs.
Her hair was tied back.
Her eyes were wet the second she recognized him.
And beneath the open coat, one hand rested protectively over her pregnant belly.
Ethan gripped the hospital bed rail.
“Serena…”
His voice cracked.
“Is that baby mine?”
The nurse froze.
Harper looked from her father to the doctor with innocent confusion.
Serena turned her face away for one second.
When she looked back, pain had become strength.
“You walked away before I could tell you.”
Ethan’s face collapsed.
“I didn’t know.”
Serena’s eyes flashed.
“You didn’t ask.”
Harper sat up on the bed, wincing.
“Daddy…”
“She looks like the picture in your drawer.”
Ethan turned sharply.
“Harper, what picture?”
Serena’s expression hardened with heartbreak.
She placed one hand on her belly and the other on Harper’s chart.
“The one you were never supposed to hide.”
The room went silent.
Ethan looked like a man watching two secrets collide.
His injured daughter had just exposed the woman he had loved.
The pregnant doctor had just exposed the child he had not known existed.
And somewhere between the hospital bed, the hidden photograph, and Serena’s trembling voice, Ethan realized the emergency had not begun when Harper fell.
