PART 2

Ethan had met Serena two years earlier in another emergency room.

Harper was four then.

Her mother, Lauren, had been gone for six months.

A sudden aneurysm.

One morning she was packing Harper’s lunch.

That afternoon, Ethan was a widower signing hospital forms with hands that would not stop shaking.

After Lauren died, Harper stopped sleeping through the night.

She clung to Ethan’s shirt.

She cried whenever he was more than one room away.

Then came the asthma attack.

Ethan drove to the hospital with Harper gasping in the back seat, promising her she would be okay while barely believing his own voice.

Serena was the doctor on duty.

Calm.

Fast.

Gentle without being weak.

She knelt beside Harper and said, “Can you squeeze my hand every time you take a breath?”

Harper squeezed.

Serena counted.

Ethan stood behind them, useless and terrified.

After Harper stabilized, Serena sat beside him in the hallway.

“You did the right thing bringing her in.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

“I almost missed it.”

“No.”

“You noticed.”

He looked at her then.

Really looked.

Not as a doctor.

As the first person in months who had spoken to him like he was not failing at fatherhood.

Over the next year, Serena became part of their life slowly.

Checkups.

Follow-up calls.

Coffee after appointments.

A shared umbrella in the parking lot.

Harper adored her first.

That was how Ethan knew he was in trouble.

Harper asked if Dr. Serena could come to her kindergarten show.

Serena came.

Harper asked if Dr. Serena could make pancakes.

Serena burned the first batch and laughed so hard Harper declared her family.

Ethan loved Serena before he admitted it.

Serena loved him while knowing grief had rooms she could not enter.

They were careful.

Then they were not.

One summer night, Ethan took a photograph of Serena sitting on the porch with Harper asleep against her shoulder.

Serena smiled at the camera.

Not posed.

Not perfect.

Happy.

Ethan printed that photograph and kept it in his bedside drawer.

He told himself it was because Harper loved it.

The truth was simpler.
