PART 4

Serena had not been meeting a lover at the hotel.

She had been meeting Vivian’s private investigator.

His name was Paul Mercer.

He had approached Serena outside the hospital after a shift and offered her an envelope.

She refused before he finished speaking.

Then he said Vivian Hart was prepared to destroy Ethan’s custody unless Serena signed an agreement promising to stay away from Harper.

Serena agreed to meet him again only to record him.

The hotel lobby was public.

The cameras were visible.

She thought she was being careful.

Paul handed her paperwork.

A confidentiality agreement.

A relocation offer.

A promise of money if she left Ethan’s life quietly.

Serena recorded the conversation on her phone.

Then she took the file to the hospital legal office because Paul had also threatened her medical license with false accusations.

That was why she could not explain everything to Ethan when he confronted her.

The hospital had opened an internal legal review.

She was instructed not to speak until counsel responded.

But Ethan was already drowning.

Vivian’s custody threat had done what it was designed to do.

It made him choose panic over trust.

Serena tried calling him for three weeks.

He did not answer.

She sent one message.

I need to talk to you.

It matters.

He replied only once.

Please stop.

The next morning, Serena took a pregnancy test in the hospital staff bathroom.

Positive.

She sat on the closed toilet lid in her scrubs and cried without making a sound.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she knew the father of her child had been taught to see her as danger.

She almost told him anyway.

Then Vivian appeared at the hospital.

Elegant.

Cold.

Smiling.

She placed one hand on Serena’s arm and whispered, “If you go near Ethan or Harper again, I will make sure he loses his daughter.”

Serena looked at her.

“You don’t get to use a child as a weapon.”

Vivian smiled.

“I already have.”

After that, Serena left Ethan alone.

Not because she stopped loving him.

Because she believed silence was the only way to keep Harper safe.

Eight months later, Ethan rushed Harper into her emergency room.
