part 3

PART 3
Ethan did not leave Serena because he stopped loving her.
That would have been cleaner.
He left because he was made afraid.
The first warning came from his mother-in-law, Vivian Hart.
Lauren’s mother.
Harper’s grandmother.
A woman who wore grief like a courtroom robe.
Vivian never forgave Ethan for surviving Lauren.
She visited often after the funeral, not to help, but to inspect.
Was Harper eating enough?
Was the house too quiet?
Was Ethan moving on too quickly?
Was Serena around too much?
At first, Ethan tried to be patient.
Vivian had lost a daughter.
But grief does not excuse ownership.
When Vivian saw Serena helping Harper with a school project, her face went cold.
“She is not this child’s mother.”
Serena stepped back immediately.
Ethan said, “No one said she was.”
Vivian looked at him.
“But you are letting her try.”
After that, things changed.
Harper’s school received anonymous concerns that Ethan was unstable.
A custody attorney contacted Vivian.
A social worker made an unexpected home visit.
Ethan found out Vivian had filed a petition for emergency grandparent guardianship.
Her claim was simple.
Ethan was rushing into a relationship with a woman who had “inappropriate emotional influence” over Harper.
Then came the envelope.
It arrived at Ethan’s office with no return address.
Inside were photographs of Serena meeting a man outside a hotel.
A bank transfer screenshot.
A note claiming Serena had accepted money from Vivian to disappear.
Ethan confronted Serena that night.
He was exhausted.
Terrified.
Already convinced everyone was about to take Harper from him.
Serena denied everything.
Ethan asked why she was at the hotel.
She said patient confidentiality prevented her from explaining.
That sounded like a lie because fear wanted it to be one.
Serena reached for him.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
He pulled away.
“I cannot risk Harper.”
Serena’s face broke.
“What does that mean?”
“It means we’re done.”
She grabbed his sleeve.
“I need to tell you something.”
He stepped back.
“No.”
“If this is about Harper, I can’t hear more.”
That was the moment he walked away.
Serena stood in his hallway with one hand pressed to her stomach.

Ethan did not see it.
