PART 9

The police report was filed before sunset.

Vivian was not arrested that night.

She was removed from the hospital.

That alone felt impossible.

For years, Vivian had entered Ethan’s home without knocking.

Answered questions meant for him.

Decided what Lauren would have wanted.

Corrected Harper’s clothes, food, school, bedtime, friendships, and grief.

Now two guards escorted her toward the exit while she shouted that everyone would regret humiliating a grandmother.

Harper watched from the doorway of her room.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“You do not ever have to be alone with her again.”

Harper looked at him carefully.

“Promise?”

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“Promise.”

Serena stood a few feet away with her hands on her belly.

A wall and a bridge at the same time.

Ethan looked up at her.

“I am sorry.”

Serena’s face did not soften immediately.

Good.

He did not deserve easy softness.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I believed the photos.”

“I know.”

“I thought choosing you might make me lose Harper.”

Serena’s eyes filled.

“And choosing fear made you lose me.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

Harper reached toward Serena.

“Can Dr. Serena still fix my wrist?”

Serena smiled gently.

“Another doctor will take the official case now, but I’ll stay until you are okay.”

Harper considered that.

“Can she stay after I’m okay?”

Ethan and Serena both froze.

Children ask the questions adults build entire legal systems to avoid.

Serena knelt carefully.

“That is something grown-ups have to talk about slowly.”

Harper nodded.

“Because of secrets?”

Ethan answered.

“Because of trust.”

Harper looked at him.

“Can you learn it again?”

Ethan looked at Serena.

“I hope so.”

Serena did not answer.

But she did not look away.

That was more mercy than he expected.

Two days later, the court granted Ethan an emergency protective order restricting Vivian’s access to Harper.

Three days later, Serena’s paternity test was legally scheduled.

Not because Ethan demanded it.

Because Serena did.

“I am done letting men learn the truth only when it helps them,” she said.

Ethan nodded.
