part 2

PART 2
Emily had not planned to return home for Thanksgiving.
She had ignored three calls from Harold.
Seven from Margaret.
Two fake-warm voicemails from Claire.
Then Harold sent one message that made her stop.
Please come.
This may be the last Thanksgiving in the house.
Emily sat in her apartment in Austin and stared at the words for a long time.
The house was not just a house.
It was the place where she learned to be useful before she learned to be loved.
It was the place where Margaret praised Claire for breathing gracefully and criticized Emily for setting the table wrong.
It was the place where Harold called Emily “practical” when he needed her help and “difficult” when she asked to be respected.
It was also the place where her grandmother taught her how to make pie crust, how to balance a checkbook, and how to leave a room with dignity when someone wanted you to beg.
Emily had left five years earlier after Margaret introduced her at a charity dinner as “our behind-the-scenes daughter.”
Not eldest.
Not brilliant.
Not the one who had helped Harold rebuild Whitmore Foods after a warehouse fire.
Behind-the-scenes.
The words followed Emily all the way to her car.
She moved to Austin two weeks later.
Built a consulting company.
Kept her last name off the website.
Worked under her middle name.
Met Nathan Cole in a conference room where he expected a supply-chain presentation and found a woman who could diagnose a failing company in twelve minutes.
He hired her.
Then respected her.
Then loved her.
Nathan knew about her family only in pieces.
Enough to hate them carefully.
Not enough to interfere before she was ready.
When Harold’s company began collapsing that year, he unknowingly approached Nathan Cole Capital for emergency financing.
Nathan brought the file home.
Emily saw the Whitmore Foods logo on the folder and went very still.
Nathan asked, “Do you want me to reject it?”
Emily said no.
Then she read the proposal.
The company was worse than Harold admitted.
Debt.
Mismanagement.
Inflated inventory.
A hidden loan guaranteed against the family estate.
Harold had not asked Emily for Thanksgiving because he missed her.
He wanted Nathan.
May you like
He just did not know Nathan was already hers.
