PART 4

Nathan arrived at 6:17 p.m.

Harold nearly ran to the door.

That alone told Emily how desperate he was.

Harold Whitmore did not run for family.

He ran for money.

Nathan Cole stepped inside wearing a black suit, calm as winter glass, carrying a small box of wine he had chosen because Emily once said her grandmother loved that vineyard.

Margaret transformed instantly.

Her voice warmed.

Her posture softened.

Her smile became expensive.

“Mr. Cole.”

“What an honor.”

Nathan shook her hand politely.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Harold clapped him on the shoulder with too much familiarity.

“Nathan, thank you for coming.”

Nathan’s eyes moved across the room.

Not to the chandelier.

Not to the board members Harold had disguised as relatives.

Not to Claire posing near the fireplace.

To Emily.

She stood near the kitchen doorway with a serving spoon in one hand and an apron tied over her dress.

For half a second, Nathan’s expression changed.

Only Emily saw it.

Not surprise.

Anger.

Controlled so tightly it became elegance.

Margaret followed his gaze.

“Oh, Emily is helping tonight.”

“She’s always more comfortable away from the formal table.”

Nathan looked at Emily.

“Is she?”

Emily held his gaze.

This was the moment where he would follow her lead.

He always had.

So he said nothing yet.

Dinner began.

Harold placed Nathan at his right hand.

Claire sat across from him, leaning forward just enough to be noticed.

Margaret seated Emily near the kitchen door, without a place card, beside the swinging service entrance.

Every time Emily sat, someone asked for something.

More wine.

More rolls.

Extra gravy.

A clean knife.

Margaret did not ask the staff.

She asked Emily.

Nathan watched.

Harold launched into a speech about family legacy, market pressure, and the need for a strategic partner who understood tradition.

Nathan listened.

Then asked, “Who prepared your restructuring analysis?”

Harold blinked.

“Our team.”

Emily looked down at her plate.

Nathan’s eyes stayed on Harold.

“Interesting.”

“Because the only competent parts read like work I have seen before.”

Harold laughed nervously.

“Well, good minds.”

Then Margaret snapped her fingers toward Emily.

“The turkey, dear.”

Emily rose.
