PART 6

Harold did not open the envelope immediately.

That was how Emily knew he was terrified.

Her father had spent his life opening contracts with theatrical confidence.

He loved paper when paper made him powerful.

Tonight, paper judged him.

Margaret recovered first.

She always did when denial was still available.

“This is ridiculous.”

She pointed at Emily.

“She trapped you.”

Nathan’s eyes turned cold.

“Be careful.”

Margaret laughed.

“Mr. Cole, you barely know what kind of woman she is.”

Nathan looked at Emily.

“I know exactly what kind of woman she is.”

Claire stood.

“Emily, why didn’t you tell us?”

Emily looked at her sister.

“Would you have been happy for me?”

Claire’s mouth closed.

The silence answered.

Logan tried to soften the room.

“Maybe everyone should calm down.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Did you enjoy watching her serve you?”

Logan flushed.

“I didn’t ask her to.”

“No.”

“You just accepted it.”

That hit more people than Logan.

Several relatives looked away.

Harold finally opened the envelope.

His face changed as he read.

“What is this?”

Nathan answered.

“A conditional rejection.”

Harold looked up sharply.

“Rejection?”

Margaret’s hand flew to her throat.

Nathan continued.

“My firm will not finance Whitmore Foods under current leadership.”

Harold’s voice broke.

“You said you were interested.”

“I was.”

Nathan turned slightly toward Emily.

“Until I learned the restructuring plan you submitted was copied from a private analysis Emily wrote years ago.”

The room went still.

Emily closed her eyes.

She had expected it.

Still, hearing it hurt.

Harold whispered, “Emily.”

Nathan placed another document on the table.

“Your company file contains her projections, her operational diagrams, and her crisis notes from the warehouse fire.”

“All submitted without attribution.”

Claire looked at Harold.

“Dad?”

Harold’s face flushed.

“I used family knowledge.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“No.”

“You used my work.”

Margaret snapped, “You did it for your father.”

Emily looked at her.

“I did it because I thought helping meant being loved.”

That sentence finally reached the oldest wound in the room.

Nathan slid the final page forward.

“There is one path forward.”

Harold looked at it as if it might save him.

Then he read the condition.

His face went gray.
