PART 5
Emily carried the turkey because she wanted to finish the performance.
That was what she told herself.
But her hands still shook.
The platter was heavy.
The dining room was too warm.
Every candle seemed to burn too brightly.
Claire whispered something to Logan.
He smirked.
Margaret looked satisfied.
Harold looked at Nathan, not Emily, waiting to see if the billionaire would praise the meal, the house, the family, the illusion.
Then Nathan stood.
The chair legs scraped against the floor.
Everyone turned.
Emily froze near the doorway with the turkey in both hands.
Nathan walked toward her.
Margaret’s smile tightened.
“Mr. Cole, please sit.”
Nathan did not.
He reached Emily and placed one hand beneath the platter.
“Let me take that.”
Emily whispered, “Nathan.”
He answered softly, “No more.”
The words were not for the room.
They were for her.
He set the turkey down on the sideboard.
Then he took Emily’s right hand.
Margaret stood sharply.
“What are you doing?”
Nathan lowered himself to one knee.
The entire room gasped.
Emily’s heart pounded so hard she almost could not breathe.
Nathan kissed the back of her hand with a tenderness that made the room’s cruelty look obscene.
Margaret’s face twisted.
“Emily belongs in the kitchen.”
Nathan rose.
Slowly.
Dangerously calm.
“She belongs beside me.”
Harold stood.
His hands gripped the table edge.
“Emily…”
He looked from her to Nathan.
“You know Mr. Cole?”
Nathan turned toward him.
“She’s my fiancée.”
Claire made a small choking sound.
Logan dropped his fork.
Margaret stared at Emily as if she had stolen something from her.
Emily untied the apron.
Her fingers were steady now.
The fabric fell to the floor.
She looked at her mother.
“Now you finally see me.”
No one spoke.
Then Nathan reached into his jacket and removed a slim legal envelope.
He placed it beside Harold’s wine glass.
Harold looked down.
“What is that?”
Nathan’s voice remained calm.
“The answer to the proposal you sent my firm.”
Harold swallowed.
“And?”
Nathan looked around the table.
Then back at Emily.
May you like
“That depends entirely on whether this family can tell the truth before dessert.”
