PART 9

Harold apologized badly at first.

Men who have spent decades avoiding truth rarely become fluent in one evening.

He said he was under pressure.

Emily did not answer.

He said the company was complicated.

Emily did not answer.

He said he had always known she was talented.

Emily looked at him then.

“That is not an apology.”

Harold closed his eyes.

Inside, Margaret watched from the dining room doorway with her arms crossed.

Claire stood behind her.

The relatives were no longer pretending not to listen.

Harold took a breath.

“I stole your work.”

The words landed heavily.

Emily did not move.

Harold continued.

“After the warehouse fire, you wrote the recovery plan.”

“I used it.”

“I presented it to the board as mine.”

Margaret snapped, “Harold.”

He raised one hand.

“No.”

His voice shook.

“I did it again this year.”

“I used old documents Emily made.”

“I submitted them to Nathan Cole’s firm.”

Claire’s face crumpled.

Logan looked at the floor.

Harold turned toward the room.

“And I let all of you treat her like she was less important than the company she kept saving.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“She left us.”

Emily looked at her mother.

“I left being used.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

Emily smiled sadly.

“No.”

“I thought if I became useful enough, you might love me.”

For the first time all night, Margaret had no answer.

Not because she was sorry.

Because the truth was too precise.

Claire began crying.

“Emily, I didn’t know Dad used your work.”

Emily looked at her.

“You knew I belonged in the kitchen tonight?”

Claire flinched.

That was answer enough.

Nathan moved beside Emily but did not speak.

This was hers.

Emily turned back to Harold.

“I will review the company.”

Hope flashed across his face.

She held up one hand.

“But I do not come back as your daughter fixing your mess.”

“I come back as acting CEO with full authority.”

Margaret gasped.

Harold nodded immediately.

Emily looked at him.

“And Mother is not allowed in company decisions.”

Margaret whispered, “You wouldn’t.”

Emily met her eyes.

“You taught me exactly what I would do when people mistake control for love.”
