PART 7

The condition was simple.

Harold Whitmore must step down as CEO.

Margaret must remove herself from all advisory authority.

Claire and Logan must surrender any pending claims to executive compensation tied to the failed restructuring.

And Emily must be offered controlling operational authority if she chose to save the company.

The dining room exploded.

Margaret slammed her wine glass onto the table.

“You cannot walk into my home and demand my husband surrender his company.”

Nathan looked at her.

“I did not walk into your home.”

“I was invited here because Harold wanted my money.”

Harold’s lips moved.

No sound came out.

Claire looked panicked now.

Not offended.

Panicked.

“What happens if Dad refuses?”

Nathan answered.

“My firm walks away.”

Logan whispered, “The bank calls the loan.”

Emily looked at him.

So Logan knew.

Of course he knew.

He had been sitting there eating turkey while the house was weeks from foreclosure.

Margaret turned on Harold.

“You said it wasn’t that bad.”

Harold’s face collapsed into guilt.

“It is worse.”

The words emptied the room.

A cousin near the end of the table put down his fork.

Claire sank into her chair.

Margaret gripped the table as if the wood belonged to her by force of touch.

Emily looked at her father.

“How long?”

Harold swallowed.

“Three months.”

“Before bankruptcy?”

He did not answer.

Nathan did.

“Less if the creditors lose confidence.”

Emily laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“You invited me to serve Thanksgiving in a house you were about to lose.”

Harold whispered, “I didn’t want to worry you.”

“No.”

Emily stepped closer.

“You wanted to use me without asking.”

Margaret pointed at Nathan.

“This is manipulation.”

Emily turned toward her.

“No, Mother.”

“Manipulation is making your daughter wear an apron so a billionaire won’t think she belongs at the table.”

Margaret looked stunned.

Not ashamed.

Stunned that Emily had said it.

Nathan held Emily’s hand again.

“Emily decides nothing tonight.”

He looked at Harold.

“You will not pressure her.”

Then he looked at Margaret.

“You will not insult her.”

Then he looked at the table.

“And if one person in this room asks whether she earned this, I will release the full audit to every creditor before midnight.”

May you like

No one asked.
