Chapter 1

Waiter Warns Retired Forensic Scientist Her Daughter and Son-in-Law Spiked Her Drink.

Margaret Hale was reaching for her glass when the waiter leaned close enough for only her to hear.

“Ma’am… please don’t drink that.”

Her fingers stopped inches from the crystal.

The pale amber liquid caught the chandelier light beautifully, glowing like something harmless and expensive.

Across the fine-dining restaurant, Chicago glittered beyond the nighttime windows. Silverware rested perfectly on white tablecloths. Diners murmured over dinner plates. Reflections shimmered in the glass.

Margaret did not turn her head.

Years in forensic science had taught her the first rule of danger.

Do not let the person watching you know when you understand.

Her daughter Claire and son-in-law Evan had just left through the gilded entrance.

Too quickly.

Too politely.

Too satisfied.

Margaret kept her eyes forward and lowered her hand.

“What did you see?”

Daniel Brooks, the young waiter, pretended to adjust the silverware beside her plate. His fingers trembled against the napkin fold.

“Your son-in-law put something in it himself.”

For one second, Margaret’s fear rose hot and sharp.

Then the scientist in her woke up.

Her breathing slowed.

Her posture settled.

She slid the glass away using the edge of her dinner plate, careful not to touch the rim.

Daniel watched her, pale but steady.

Margaret lifted a clean folded napkin and placed it over the glass without disturbing it. Then she gave him one controlled look toward the manager.

He understood.

The glass went onto his tray beneath the napkin.

A manager approached with a sealed container hidden under a service cloth.

At that moment, two uniformed police officers passed silently through the restaurant entrance.

Margaret’s phone vibrated.

Claire.

Margaret answered.

Her daughter’s voice sounded soft, concerned, and impatient.

“Did you finish your drink, Mom?”

Margaret looked at the sealed glass.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Detective Lena Ortiz entering behind the officers in a dark coat.

Margaret let her shoulders sag.

She forced her voice to sound slow.

Tired.

Trusting.

“Delicious. I’m getting sleepy already.”

On the other end, Claire released a quiet breath of relief.

And Margaret Hale lowered the phone as her expression turned to ice.
