Chapter 10

Claire still believed the plan had succeeded.

Margaret could hear it in her breathing.

The relief.

The impatience.

The effort to sound loving now that she thought danger had already passed to the other side of the glass.

“Just stay there, Mom,” Claire said. “Evan is arranging everything.”

Margaret looked at the sealed container in Daniel’s hands.

At Detective Ortiz standing near the table.

At the uniformed officers moving quietly through the restaurant without disturbing the diners.

At the untouched place where the crystal glass had been.

The substance remained unnamed.

The lab results did not exist yet.

The inheritance scheme, if there was one, remained hidden behind whatever Claire and Evan thought tonight would accomplish.

No one was arrested.

No revenge was complete.

But the first proof had survived.

That was enough for now.

Margaret let her breathing slow again.

“Claire,” she whispered.

“Yes?”

“You sound relieved.”

A pause.

Too long.

Then Claire laughed weakly.

“Of course I’m relieved. You said you were sleepy. I was worried.”

Margaret’s eyes turned cold.

“I know.”

Detective Ortiz made brief eye contact with her and nodded once.

Daniel stood behind her now, the sealed container secure at his side, his face pale but resolute.

Blue and red police lights rippled across the restaurant windows, breaking across crystal, silverware, and the white tablecloth like flashes of truth no one could yet name.

Claire spoke again, softer.

“Mom, are you alone?”

Margaret looked around the restaurant.

At the officers.

At the detective.

At the waiter who had risked his job because he refused to stay silent.

Then she smiled faintly.

Tired.

Convincing.

Deadly calm.

“Not for long.”

Claire exhaled as if that was exactly what she wanted to hear.

She still did not understand.

She still believed her mother had finished the drink.

She still believed the next move belonged to her and Evan.

Margaret lowered the phone from her ear but did not end the call.

Behind the glass entrance, more blue light flashed across the polished floor.

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

Daniel tightened his grip on the sealed evidence.

And Margaret Hale sat perfectly still beneath the chandelier, letting her daughter believe the plan had worked while the police quietly entered the restaurant.
