Chapter 7

Evan’s voice joined the call.

He did not greet Margaret.

That was careless.

He spoke to Claire first, muffled but close.

“Ask if she feels dizzy.”

Claire whispered, “She can hear you.”

A pause.

Then Evan’s tone changed, smooth and son-in-law polite.

“Margaret? How are you feeling?”

Margaret leaned back in her chair and let the chandelier light catch the moisture in her eyes.

She wanted him to believe her frightened.

Weak.

Slipping.

“Sleepy,” she murmured.

“Did you eat enough?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Just stay there.”

Stay there.

Not because he worried she might fall.

Because he wanted her still.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

He stood frozen, tray held carefully, eyes fixed on the officers moving discreetly near the entrance.

Poor boy, she thought.

He had entered a family crime without knowing the family.

Claire said, “Mom, don’t talk to anyone, okay? People might make a fuss.”

Margaret almost laughed.

There was her daughter.

Still trying to manage appearances even inside betrayal.

“Why would anyone make a fuss?” Margaret asked.

Claire hesitated.

“I just mean… you get dramatic when you’re tired.”

Dramatic.

Suspicious.

Cold.

Controlling.

Those were the words Evan had taught Claire to use when Margaret asked for clarity.

Margaret looked at the untouched water glass beside her plate and thought of all the dinners where she had tried to pull Claire back from him.

Evan always smiled.

Claire always defended him.

Now the truth sat sealed behind Daniel’s shaking hands.

Lena Ortiz finally approached Margaret’s table, stopping just outside casual listening distance.

Margaret gave the smallest shake of her head.

Not yet.

Lena understood.

On the phone, Evan asked, “Is the waiter still there?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Then lied smoothly.

“No.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

Lena’s did not.

Claire exhaled again.

Margaret heard the relief.

It sounded almost like childhood.
