Chapter 8

The restaurant began to notice the police.

Not fully.

Not enough to create chaos.

But fine-dining rooms are sensitive to disruption.

A man near the windows stopped mid-sentence.

A woman at the bar lowered her glass.

The maître d’ moved too slowly past the entrance.

Blue and red lights rippled across the crystal glassware and made every table look briefly underwater.

Margaret remained seated.

That was deliberate.

If she stood too soon, Claire might panic.

If she ended the call, Evan might run.

If she confronted them, the plan would become accusation instead of evidence.

So she sat beneath the chandelier in her ivory dress, diamond earrings still, voice faint, mind sharp.

Detective Ortiz leaned down as if asking about service.

Margaret covered the phone’s microphone with two fingers.

“Call active. Claire and Evan believe I drank it. Glass preserved. Waiter saw Evan manipulate drink. Daughter asked for confirmation.”

Lena nodded.

“Any symptoms?”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“No exposure after warning.”

“Good.”

Margaret uncovered the phone.

Claire was saying her name.

“Mom? Mom?”

“I’m here.”

“You scared me.”

Did she?

Margaret studied the candle flame near her plate.

Had she scared Claire when she refused to transfer the lake property?

When she changed her medical proxy?

When she removed Evan from her investment review?

When she asked too many questions about documents Claire claimed were routine?

She did not know which fear had finally become action.

That was for later.

Not now.

Claire said, “We’re coming back soon.”

Margaret looked toward Lena.

The detective’s expression changed slightly.

Soon mattered.

“Take your time,” Margaret murmured.

Claire sounded pleased.

“You just rest.”

Margaret let her head tilt as if fatigue were pulling at her neck.

Across the restaurant, Daniel watched with horror and admiration.
