Chapter 6

Detective Lena Ortiz had met Margaret Hale only once before.
A courthouse hallway.
A homicide trial.
Ten years earlier.
Lena was a younger detective then, angry because a defense attorney had tried to twist evidence into doubt.
Margaret had taken the stand and calmly rebuilt the truth piece by piece until the jury could see what Lena had seen at the scene.
Afterward, Lena said, “You made it sound simple.”
Margaret answered, “The truth is rarely simple. It only becomes clear when people stop touching it.”
Lena remembered that.
So when the restaurant manager called and said Margaret Hale might be involved in an attempted poisoning or tampering incident, Lena came herself.
Quietly.
No dramatic entrance.
No badge raised.
No announcement.
Margaret appreciated that too.
People who storm into rooms often trample the room’s testimony.
Lena entered behind the officers and scanned the restaurant.
Margaret at table twelve.
Daniel near the service station.
Manager Elise standing slightly too still.
Covered container.
Phone in Margaret’s hand.
Call likely active.
Claire and Evan absent.
Lena understood quickly.
She did not approach Margaret immediately.
Instead, she moved near Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Lena spoke softly.
“You’re the waiter?”
“Yes.”
“You saw something added to the glass?”
“I think so.”
“Do not guess beyond what you saw.”
Daniel nodded.
Lena’s eyes softened briefly.
“Good. Stay exact.”
Margaret heard enough to approve.
Exact witnesses survive cross-examination.
Hero witnesses often do not.
On the phone, Claire spoke again.
“Mom? Are you still there?”
Margaret lifted the phone.
“I’m here.”
“You sound tired.”
“I am.”
“Evan says we can send a car for you.”
No, Margaret thought.
Of course you can.
A car away from witnesses.
Away from the glass.
Away from cameras.
Away from Daniel.
Away from the restaurant.
Margaret let her voice blur.
“That sounds nice.”
Claire’s voice warmed.
False relief.
“We’ll take care of everything.”
Margaret looked at Detective Ortiz.
I know, she thought.

That is exactly what scares me.
