Chapter 9

Daniel wanted to disappear.
He also knew he could not.
Detective Ortiz had asked him to remain near the service station, container secure, tray stable, no unnecessary handling.
He obeyed.
But his eyes kept moving to Margaret.
She looked fragile from a distance.
An elegant older widow in an ivory dress, shoulders sagging, phone at her ear.
Up close, Daniel had seen something else.
Control.
Not the cold control of someone unfeeling.
The painful control of someone whose heart had to step aside so her mind could save her life.
Daniel thought of his own mother.
Hospital bills.
Medication schedules.
The reason he worked double shifts in rooms where rich people snapped fingers for salt.
If someone had warned his mother, he hoped they would have done what he did.
Even if their hands shook.
Manager Elise stood beside him.
“You okay?” she whispered.
“No.”
“Good answer.”
He almost laughed.
Then Claire’s voice rose faintly from Margaret’s phone.
“Mom, promise me you won’t leave with anyone else.”
Margaret replied, softly, “Who else would I leave with?”
Claire paused.
“Just promise.”
Margaret looked toward Detective Ortiz.
The detective’s eyes narrowed.
“Alright,” Margaret said. “I’ll wait.”
Claire’s relief was immediate.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
Evan had not simply wanted Margaret to drink.
They wanted movement controlled afterward.
A car.
A location.
Privacy.
A next step Daniel could not imagine and did not want to.
Police officers near the entrance adjusted position quietly.
One spoke into a radio, low enough not to disturb diners.
No arrest.
No announcement.
Only containment.
Margaret lowered her eyes to the white tablecloth.
For the first time, Daniel saw her hand tremble.
Only once.
Then it stopped.
She lifted the phone again.
“Claire?”
“Yes, Mom?”
Margaret’s voice softened.
“You always hated when I knew things before you told me.”
Silence.
A long one.
Then Claire said, “You’re tired. You’re not making sense.”

But she sounded afraid.
