Chapter 1

Wealthy Hostess Invites Her Maid as a Joke Before a Hidden Document Links Her to the Family Heir.
Ava Covington invited Lisa Davis to the gala because she wanted everyone to laugh.
Instead, the laughter died the moment Lisa stepped beneath the crystal chandelier.
The Nashville mansion foyer gleamed with marble, white flowers, champagne glasses, and wealthy guests dressed like old money had personally approved them. Along the sweeping staircase, conversations stopped one by one.
Lisa stood in the center of it all wearing a deep-burgundy beaded ball gown, her brunette hair falling in polished waves, diamond earrings catching the chandelier light.
In one hand, she held a cream envelope.
In the other, a slim black folder.
Ava’s smile collapsed first.
She stepped directly into Lisa’s path, navy lace gown whispering across the marble floor, champagne flute gripped too tightly in one hand.
“The help enters through the service door.”
Lisa did not flinch.
She opened the black folder and lifted a gold-edged invitation just high enough for the room to recognize it.
“You invited me, Mrs. Covington.”
Several guests looked away.
Ava’s eyes flicked to the envelope.
“What exactly are you holding?”
Lisa looked past her toward Zachary Covington, who had stopped halfway down the staircase.
“The document your husband hid for three years.”
Ava’s champagne glass tilted.
Zachary came down the remaining steps, his expression shifting from confusion to alarm.
Lisa opened the cream envelope and removed a formal document with an embossed seal and two blurred signature lines.
She held it toward Zachary.
Not Ava.
Zachary took it.
His eyes moved over the page.
Then stopped.
His breathing changed.
He looked at Lisa.
“Why are both our names on it?”
Lisa remained silent.
Ava stepped backward, color draining from her face.

And the entire Covington mansion seemed to understand at once: the woman Ava invited to humiliate was carrying the secret her late husband had hidden in plain sight.
