Chapter 2

Lisa Davis had worked inside the Covington mansion for nearly three years.

Not because she belonged there.

That was what Ava always made clear.

Lisa polished marble she was not allowed to walk across after parties. She arranged flowers she was never thanked for noticing. She carried trays past guests who did not look at her face long enough to remember it.

To Ava, Lisa was useful.

Invisible.

Disposable.

“The girl from housekeeping,” Ava called her, even after Lisa corrected her twice.

“My name is Lisa.”

Ava smiled both times.

“Yes, dear. That’s what I said.”

The mansion staff learned quickly not to defend anyone Ava had chosen to reduce.

But Lisa endured it.

Quietly.

Not weakly.

There was a difference.

She was calm because she was waiting.

Waiting for a name to appear.

Waiting for a file to surface.

Waiting for the right person to ask the right question in a room where Ava could not twist the answer before it reached Zachary.

The invitation came by accident, or so Ava thought.

Ava was hosting a charity gala in honor of her late husband, Charles Covington. The event was meant to celebrate legacy, philanthropy, and family loyalty—words Ava enjoyed saying in rooms full of donors.

Two weeks before the gala, Ava held up an extra invitation and smiled at Lisa.

“You should come.”

The other women in the room laughed softly.

Lisa looked up from the floral inventory.

“As a guest?”

Ava’s eyes glittered.

“If you can find something appropriate.”

Lisa understood the cruelty immediately.

A joke invitation.

A way to let rich women watch the maid arrive uncomfortable, underdressed, grateful, and small.

But Ava had miscalculated.

Because Charles Covington had not left Lisa only memories.

He had left instructions.

And three days before the gala, a cream envelope finally reached Lisa’s hands.
