Chapter 6

Zachary took the document carefully.
The paper felt heavier than it should have.
Ava stepped toward him.
“Zachary, don’t.”
He looked at his mother.
That was the wrong thing for her to say.
If she had laughed, dismissed it, called it fake, maybe he would have hesitated.
But don’t carried fear.
Don’t carried knowledge.
Don’t carried guilt.
Zachary looked down.
The document was formal, sealed, and old enough to have been prepared before his father’s final illness.
He saw his own full legal name.
Then Lisa’s.
On the same page.
In the same section.
His pulse kicked hard.
He scanned for meaning, but the legal language was careful, dense, and incomplete without attachments not included in the envelope.
Still, he understood enough to know the document was not a prank.
Not forged easily.
Not something Lisa could have invented from gossip.
“Where did you get this?” he asked.
Lisa’s eyes remained steady.
“It was delivered to me under your father’s instructions.”
Ava laughed once.
It was brittle.
“Charles was ill. He signed many things near the end.”
Lisa turned to her.
“This was prepared before he was ill.”
Ava’s face tightened.
Zachary looked at the date.
Lisa was right.
The foyer seemed to tilt.
Guests leaned closer without meaning to.
Chloe Mitchell whispered something to the woman beside her, then stopped when Ava looked her way.
Ava reached for the document again.
Zachary moved it out of her reach.
His mother stared at him as if he had betrayed her.
But all Zachary could think was this:
