Chapter 7

Ava changed tactics.

Her voice softened.

“Zachary, this is not the place.”

Lisa’s expression did not change.

Ava turned toward the guests with a strained smile.

“Everyone, please enjoy the champagne. This is a family misunderstanding.”

No one moved.

The word family made the silence worse.

Zachary looked down at the document again.

“Why is Lisa’s name here?”

Ava’s lips pressed together.

“We can discuss this privately.”

Lisa said, “That is what Charles was afraid of.”

Ava’s eyes flashed.

“You do not speak for my husband.”

Lisa’s calm finally sharpened.

“No. He spoke for himself. You hid it.”

A murmur moved through the foyer.

Ava’s champagne glass trembled.

Zachary saw it.

His mother, who could host senators without spilling a drop, was shaking because Lisa Davis had brought paper into her house.

He turned to Lisa.

“What else is in the folder?”

Lisa held the black folder against her gown.

“Enough to show this was not meant to disappear.”

Ava snapped, “You were paid to clean rooms, not handle Covington legal matters.”

Lisa looked at her.

“You made me invisible. That doesn’t mean I didn’t see.”

The sentence landed quietly but deeply.

Zachary remembered the emptied drawer after his father’s funeral.

The retired attorney.

Ava’s insistence that all estate matters were settled.

His own unease buried under grief and obedience.

He looked at the names again.

His.

Lisa’s.

Together.

The page did not explain everything.
