Chapter 3

Zachary Covington had noticed Lisa before the gala.

Not romantically.

Not clearly.

But enough to remember that she did not move like the other staff.

She was careful, yes, but never servile.

When Ava snapped, Lisa listened without shrinking.

When guests ignored her, she remained composed.

When Zachary once apologized for nearly bumping into her near the staircase, Lisa looked genuinely surprised.

“You don’t need to apologize, Mr. Covington.”

“Yes,” he said. “I do.”

That was the first time she looked directly at him.

Her eyes were not grateful.

They were searching.

It unsettled him.

After his father died, Zachary had inherited grief wrapped in unanswered questions. Charles Covington had been complicated, secretive, and far warmer to strangers than to family. Ava controlled the public version of him now.

Beloved husband.

Visionary donor.

Protector of the Covington name.

Zachary accepted some of it and doubted the rest.

He knew his mother edited history.

He also knew Charles had hidden things.

Files disappeared from the home office after the funeral.

A locked drawer was emptied.

One attorney retired suddenly.

Ava said it was all routine.

But nothing in that house had felt routine for years.

Then Lisa arrived at the gala.

Not through the service entrance.

Through the front doors.

In a burgundy gown so elegant even the guests forgot to pretend they weren’t staring.

Zachary watched from the staircase as Ava’s face changed.

Disbelief first.

Then contempt.

Then fear.

Fear was what made him move.

Ava could disguise anger beautifully.

Fear escaped her.

When Lisa lifted the cream envelope, Zachary felt something pull tight in his chest.

It was not recognition.

Not yet.

It was the strange certainty that his father’s silence had just entered the room wearing a name no one had respected.
