Chapter 9

Ava stepped backward.
Only one step.
But Zachary saw it.
So did Lisa.
Fear had begun moving her body before pride could command it.
“Zachary,” Ava said, “your father was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
Ava looked at Lisa.
“From people who attach themselves to powerful families.”
Lisa did not react.
That restraint made Ava look crueler.
Zachary stared at his mother.
“She worked here.”
“Yes,” Ava said quickly. “Exactly.”
Lisa’s voice remained controlled.
“And yet Charles hid a document with both our names in it.”
Ava’s face tightened again.
Zachary looked at the page.
The embossed seal.
The blurred signature lines.
His father’s initials near the bottom.
A second line that made his stomach twist though he could not fully interpret it yet.
He needed attorneys.
He needed records.
He needed the attachments Lisa was not showing.
But he also needed one answer now.
He looked at Ava.
“Did you know?”
Ava lifted her chin.
“I knew your father made mistakes.”
The room went silent.
Lisa’s eyes hardened.
Zachary felt something inside him go cold.
Not because Ava admitted everything.
She hadn’t.
But because she called the document a mistake before claiming it was meaningless.
That meant she knew.
Maybe not all.
Maybe not what Lisa had now.
But enough.
Zachary looked down again at the two names.
Zachary Covington.
Lisa Davis.
Together in a place neither of them had agreed to be.
The question escaped him before he could make it sound less afraid.
“Why are both our names on it?”
Lisa remained silent.

Ava’s face lost the last of its color.
