Chapter 14 - The kitchen camera

The kitchen camera existed because Daniel loved smart-home systems.

He installed it to watch our dog during travel.

It faced the kitchen and part of the pantry entrance.

It did not show Daniel’s hand striking my face.

The pantry wall blocked the exact moment.

His lawyer celebrated that.

Then investigators listened to audio.

My voice:

“Her name.”

Daniel:

“Give me the phone.”

Me:

“No.”

Movement.

A sharp impact.

Something hitting cabinetry.

Then silence.

Daniel:

“You came at me.”

Me:

“I was standing still.”

Daniel:

“You shoved the phone in my face.”

Me:

“I held it.”

Then:

“Look what you made this become.”

The recording did not show everything.

It corroborated enough.

My bruise.

His text.

My immediate report.

The timeline.

Domestic violence cases rarely arrive with perfect camera angles.
