Chapter 25 - Daniel finally tells the truth without bargaining
Daniel’s financial case resolved nearly two years after breakfast.
He entered a plea agreement after the court admitted significant portions of the banking and vendor evidence and Evan remained prepared to testify.
The plea covered a reduced set of charges.
He accepted responsibility for deliberately authorizing false or inflated vendor payments and misusing company reimbursements.
Custodial time.
Not decades.
Followed by supervised release and restitution.
The exact sentence was serious enough to remove him from ordinary life for a period and short enough that he would someday return to it.
Before sentencing, Daniel wrote me.
I nearly did not read it.
Then did.
I told myself I was borrowing from a company my family built.
Then:
I told myself the condo project would pay off and I would replace everything.
Then:
When the affair began, I told myself our marriage was already broken, even though I had never told you that.
Then:
When you discovered the hotel receipt, I was not afraid you had misunderstood me. I was afraid you finally understood enough.
And:
I hit you because I wanted the conversation to stop. Then I blamed you because admitting that would have made me the man I thought I wasn’t.
No request for reconciliation.
No:
But you invaded my privacy.
No:
But the company owed me.

For the first time, the letter did not contain a door back to his version.
I believed that part.
