Chapter 6 - Daniel is arrested for one thing
Daniel was not arrested for fraud that morning.
There was no dramatic financial-crimes takedown over breakfast.
The fraud investigation was still developing.
But Chicago police had:
My statement.
A visible injury.
Photographs.
The partial kitchen recording.
A text Daniel sent me at 1:14 a.m.:
I’m sorry I reacted physically. You cornered me and I lost it.
That text was not a complete confession.
It was enough to matter.
After interviewing him separately, officers arrested Daniel on a domestic-battery allegation.
No tackle.
No gun.
No cinematic screaming.
They handcuffed him in the library.
I did not watch.
His lawyer secured release under pretrial conditions later that day.
No contact with me except through counsel.
No return to the house without arranged civil standby.
The financial folder remained closed during the arrest.
Dana took it with her.
That frustrated Daniel more than being removed.
Because he understood what arrest procedures looked like.
