I finally saw the contents of Dana’s portfolio six weeks after breakfast.
Not because she dramatically opened it for me.
Because my lawyer received certain materials through the divorce and investigation processes.
The folder held preliminary summaries.
Not the entire case.
A hotel-payment chronology.
Vendor registration records.
Bank-account link analysis.
Copies of invoices.
A corporate-card exception report.
Four email threads.
One page listing questions for Daniel.
And a chart of people who had independently reported inconsistencies.
The familiar seal had frightened Daniel because he imagined the folder contained everything.
It did not.
That was almost funny.
The real danger was not the paper.
It was the network behind it.
Auditors.
Banks.
Hotels.
Vendors.
Witnesses.
Logs.
Systems.
Daniel had spent years controlling information by controlling relationships.
