Chapter 1 - The Door Opens to Police

A burned wife returns home with police and confronts the husband who attacked her after she refused to finance his demanding sister.

Ryan Lawson came home laughing.

His key scraped into the lock of the luxury Chicago high-rise apartment while Rachel leaned against his shoulder, smiling like she had already won.

Behind the door waited warm chandelier light, cold skyline reflections, marble counters, cream curtains, and the kind of silence that rich men mistake for obedience.

Ryan shoved the door open.

“Rachel gets the card tonight. Emily will apologize.”

Rachel lifted her empty designer handbag with a smug little shake, ready for Emily’s credit card, jewelry, and whatever else Ryan had promised her.

Then both of them stopped.

Emily stood inside the apartment beside two uniformed officers.

Her long dark-brown hair fell over her ivory blazer and white satin dress.

A cloth-wrapped ice pack rested against the left side of her face.

Open black suitcases sat near the sofa, filled with her belongings.

External hard drives were packed beside her white handbag.

The wedding ring was still on her finger.

But not for long.

Ryan’s smile vanished.

Rachel crashed lightly into his back, then stared at the suitcases with absurdly wide eyes.

Emily slowly lowered the ice pack.

The red scald marks along her cheek and neck were visible beneath the chandelier light.

“I reported the burns and every threat.”

Ryan’s face twisted.

His phone hit the marble island with a violent slap.

“You brought police into my house?”

He lunged forward.

One officer stepped between them and placed an open palm firmly against Ryan’s chest.

“Stay where you are and keep your hands visible.”

Emily walked to the island.

She removed her wedding ring and dropped it onto the unreadable police report.

The metallic sound echoed through the apartment.

Rachel looked at the report.

Then at the packed drives.

Then at Emily.

Emily raised her phone toward Ryan.

“Take one more step and finish your confession.”

Ryan froze.

For the first time, he looked afraid.
