Chapter 4 - The Police Report on the Marble

The police report lay on the marble island without readable text.

Just paper.

Official weight.

A thing Ryan could see but not rewrite.

Emily had placed it there before he returned because she wanted the apartment to understand the order of things.

First the report.

Then the ring.

Then the phone.

Then his choice.

The ring rested on top now, pale and cold under chandelier light.

Rachel stared at it as if it were a threat.

Ryan stared as if it were an insult.

Emily stared as if it were finally just metal.

The older officer near the doorway adjusted his stance.

Not aggressive.

Deliberate.

Enough to remind Ryan that the hallway was blocked.

Ryan glanced toward the exit.

Emily caught it.

So did Rachel.

So did the officers.

That small glance said more than his shouting had.

Men who have done nothing wrong do not always calculate exits first.

Ryan drew himself up.

“I want both of you out of my apartment.”

The nearest officer remained calm.

“We are here at Mrs. Martin’s request.”

Ryan’s eyes flashed.

“Her name is Lawson.”

Emily’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Then she lifted her hand and pointed to the ring on the report.

“Not for much longer.”

Rachel gasped.

Ryan’s eyes went wide with violent disbelief.

“You don’t decide that.”

Emily did not answer.

The prompt of the moment would not reveal divorce proceedings.

Not yet.

No completed divorce.

No final legal consequence.

Only the first rupture.

Rachel stepped toward the suitcase nearest the sofa.

Her fingers brushed the zipper.

Emily’s voice cut through the room.

“Don’t touch it.”

Rachel froze.

The authority in Emily’s voice startled all of them.

Even Emily felt it.

Ryan looked at Rachel’s hand.

Then at the suitcase.

Then at Emily’s phone.

He understood too late that every ordinary object in the room had changed category.

Suitcase.

Ring.

Report.

Phone.

Not belongings.
