Chapter 8 - The Apartment He Called His

Ryan looked around the luxury apartment as if it might help him.

The marble island.

The crystal chandelier.

The modern artwork.

The city skyline.

The cream curtains.

The sofa where Emily’s suitcase sat open like a wound.

He had called it his house.

His apartment.

His life.

His wife.

His money.

But the room did not answer to him now.

It answered to the report on the island, the officers at the door, Emily’s packed belongings, and the phone in her steady hand.

Ryan pointed toward the suitcases again.

“You are not taking those out of here.”

Emily stared at him.

“Watch me.”

Rachel’s mouth fell open.

The officers shifted slightly closer to Emily.

Ryan saw the movement and laughed bitterly.

“You think they can stay here all night?”

Emily did not respond to the threat hidden inside the question.

She turned her phone slightly.

“Say that more clearly.”

Ryan froze.

The officer near the doorway looked directly at him.

Rachel whispered, “Stop talking.”

This time Ryan did not tell her to shut up.

He looked too busy calculating.

Could he claim Emily was stealing?

Could he claim the officers were trespassing?

Could he call someone?

Could he use money?

Could he use charm?

Could he use rage?

Every option looked weaker under recording.

Emily picked up the ice pack again and pressed it gently near her neck.

The pain steadied her.

It reminded her why the room had to look exactly like this.

No hiding.

No makeup.

No private apology.

No letting Ryan decide what the night meant.

He stared at the ice pack.

Then at the police report.

Then at the hard drives.

Then at Rachel’s empty handbag.

His face drained further.

The full legal consequences were not revealed.

The complete evidence remained hidden.

But Ryan finally realized this was not the end of a bad evening.
