Chapter 5 - Ryan Tries to Own the Room

Ryan had owned rooms all his life.
Not legally, always.
But socially.
He owned them by entering first, speaking loudest, smiling like consequences were for smaller people.
He owned dinner tables by interrupting.
He owned parties by insulting gently enough to make others laugh.
He owned arguments by standing too close.
He owned Emily’s fear by teaching it what would happen if she resisted.
Tonight, the apartment would not obey him.
The officers did not move when he glared.
Emily did not step back when he pointed.
Rachel did not laugh when he tried to look amused.
That was when Ryan’s panic sharpened into fury.
He grabbed his phone from the marble island.
Emily’s camera followed the movement.
His hand shook so hard the screen flickered with reflected chandelier light.
No readable interface.
Only panic.
“You’re recording me illegally,” he snapped.
The officer closest to him said nothing.
Emily tilted her head.
“You were very confident when no one could hear you.”
Ryan’s jaw ground visibly.
Rachel whispered, “Emily, please. This is getting serious.”
Emily looked at her.
“It was serious when you came for my card.”
Rachel’s mouth opened.
Closed.
The designer handbag hung uselessly from her wrist.
Ryan turned toward Rachel with a look so sharp she stepped back again.
Emily saw it.
The officers saw it.
Ryan realized they saw it.
That made his face contort.
“Everyone is twisting this.”
Emily’s voice stayed calm.
“No. You’re finally being witnessed.”
He lunged one step before thinking.
The officer’s shoulders tightened.
Ryan stopped himself mid-motion.
That sudden self-control landed like a confession in Emily’s chest.
He could stop.
He had always been able to stop.
He just had not bothered when she was alone.
The phone captured his frozen body, his clenched fists, his false restraint.
Rachel gripped the open suitcase beside her.
Inside were Emily’s folded clothes, a small pouch of jewelry, and hard drives Ryan had not known she removed.
His eyes dropped to them.

Recognition began to spread.
